Title:
Plastidip Weapons
Current Rule, as written today, with Rules of Play page numbers for reference. (If Applicable):
Currently the striking edge of a weapon requires a cloth cover.
Proposed change, as you would see it written:
The striking edge must be safe when applied to a full force strike and cannot leave a mark or inflict more than mild discomfort with a swing.
Reason this change would benefit Amtgard, as part of the V8 Rules:
Plastidipped weapons offer a remarkable improvement to the look of the game. The previous rules were not written when plastidipping was common.
We at Boreal Dale would like the opportunity to playtest this before changes are made to ensure that the end result is a weapon that is as safe, at least, as the current weapons.

Amtgard is not a lightest-touch LARP. I don't believe this would be as safe as the submitter had intended.

My thoughts are the same, I also don't agree that V8 "was not written when plastidipping was common"; this was not an oversight in the Rules of Play. Any lightening of our safety standards is going to come under heavy scrutiny.

I have seen commentary from the V8 team stating the PD weapons were tested as part of the V8 play test process and they resulted in abrasions and other minor injuries. This is why they compromised with cloth only on the striking surface and allowing PD on non-striking surfaces. I agree with the above two posters that this would not be a good idea.

The issue I see with this is that different materials under PD provide very different surfaces. For example, I think that cross linked polyethylene foam (Minicel) is soft enough to use a striking surface with or without PD. However, the rough edge of plank foam would be scratch even with several coats of PD. The problem is that you can't control what material is used under the PD to ensure a smooth striking surface equal in softness to cloth. I too would love to see all PD weapons used as well, but until we start wearing helmets, I don't see it as passing.
